“No. It’s just taking the easy way out.”
— Harry, to Werner. A New Home: Revelations
Similar to Tony’s own history when he was younger, Werner’s spent a lot of time partying and not really studying as much as he probably could have been. He also has a lot of similarities to his father and brother, in that his relationship with his biological father was strained…to put it mildly. And he would have willingly continued on with his party lifestyle, if he hadn’t been captured by HYDRA agents intending to torture him and eventually kill him.
After being rescued by Mike Peterson, Werner wrote down all of the information his captors had discussed freely in front of him. And after freely warning Robbie that HYDRA was aware of the Ghost Rider, he also integrated himself with Robbie, who came along to the Avengers compound to protect his brother…and also to make sure that Werner wasn’t treated roughly.
“We were worried about you. Worried that HYDRA had decided to finish what they’d started when they took you the first time.”
— Tony, to Werner. A New Home: Almost Smells Like Teen Spirit
Despite Harry attaching himself to Werner extremely quickly, Werner couldn’t bring himself to believe he was really wanted. He’s had an almost desperate need to please; first through trying to get more information on HYDRA (so he could stay with the Avengers) and then promising obedience to Tony when his new father took him in hand for putting himself in danger. He’s settled a bit more emotionally after being officially adopted by Tony and Pepper, but it took a long time for him to truly believe he was wanted.
Out of the other family members, Werner is probably closest to Harry and Robbie. He’s still quite uncertain of his place in the family and how to interact with the other people. While he wouldn’t put voice to it out loud, he’s only really used to interacting with one-night stands. He’s still learning how to be in a true family that love him and love each other.
